Leaf Observations

First graders listened to a non fiction book called When Autumn Comes by Robert Maas. Kids then discussed how scientists observe with their senses to explore and learn about things in their world. Everyone chose a leaf and using their powers of observation and a magnifying glass they recorded observations about their leaf.

Color Scientists

For the past few weeks Mrs. Dorer has come into our room to teach us about color. Kids have been color scientists, creating their own colors in test tubes, learning about the color wheel and mixing colors on a motorized car and exploring colors with special goggles.

Word Work

Word work is part of our literacy program where kids "play" with words. Today kids were writing insect names in a bug book, writing rainbow words and writing about themselves. These activities give kids practice spelling, writing and reading!

Gerbils in our Classroom!

We have two little white gerbils in our classroom to take care of and learn about! Their names are Gumby and Skittles. First graders from last year named them. They love to go home with families on the weekends and are easy to care for. They eat seeds, fruits and some vegetables. They love to chew on cardboard which keeps their teeth healthy.

Read To Self

Read to self is already a favorite part of our day. Kids have a book bag with a few books at their independent reading level (which means they can be easily read and enjoyed). Everyone finds their own quiet spot to read. This practice helps all readers learn to really sit and take the time to enjoy good books!
