The Great Big Enormous Turnip
One of our reading groups read a story about a giant turnip. The story was written as a play and the kids wanted to act it out. They chose parts, made some simple costumes and invited another group to help. They acted it out for their friends when they were ready!

Picnic snack!
Today our tables were filled with a snowy project so everyone ate their snacks on our rug, like a picnic! We also listened to two stories read aloud: Harry the Dirty Dog and Chester's Way from a cool website that has many stories for kids to listen to and enjoy. Find the link to the story website under the section on our blog called : Fun websites To Explore!

Unifix Cube Measurement
Kids measured classroom objects using unifix cube trains of 10. When they started to run out of unifix cubes the challenge was to only use 1 train of 10 cubes and figure out how to measure a long object. It was lots of fun!
Happy 2014!
Welcome back to school in the New Year! What a great week we have had together! First graders came back to school ready to learn and have been working hard all week. Everyone is a bit more mature, a lot more helpful and kind to one another and quite a bit more independent. It's great to see how much your kids have grown since September.
I want to thank all of our families for the wonderful, generous gifts you gave to me and to our class last month. We have already used the weather book and both the penguin book and the seed growing book will be part of our late winter/early spring discussions. Thank you, too, for the gift cards-Barnes and Noble is one of my favorite destinations, and the garden journal will be great to use when we can get back outside and watch our bulbs pop out of the ground!
Most of all I am appreciative of the children in my care-the ones you have entrusted to us each day at school. They are such a pleasure to spend the days with! I hope you are seeing growth at home like we are here in the classroom.
Fondly,
Debbie Davies
