A Day In First Grade

Welcome to Back To School Night! This collection of photos will give you a window into our classroom, how we work and learn and how hard we all are working to make our class a great place to be!

Kids arrive with their home folders and start their day! First, the question of the day!

Then kids put their folders and notes in the baskets.

Then they sign in each day so we know they're here and they also practice writing
          their names!

Next comes lunch count where kids learn quickly how to make tallies!

Then kids choose their morning work.

Kids who want to sign up to share at our morning meetingl

They choose their own work, their own place to do their work and they're off !

Next comes our morning meeting where we spend time thanking people who have done something for us or made us feel good in some way. Then it's time for share and shine, where kids who have a story to tell get a chance to tell it!

Number Corner is an important part of our math program and we have fun with it, too! Here kids are predicting the many patterns on the calendar makers and trying to draw what they think will be on the calendar marker for this day.

Fundations, our phonics program also happens in the morning. Here, our student teacher Casey is helping kids practice letter formation on their small whiteboards and on the large whiteboard, too.

The next part of our morning is called Daily 5 which refers to five components of our literacy block that kids work on independently: word work, work on writing, read to someone, listen to reading and read to self. Kids make their own choices for this time and have learned through modeling,  practice and discussion what they must do for each component they choose.

Then it's clean up time and off to lunch!

After lunch every day we do read to self. Kids are practicing looking at books, reading the pictures, reading the words they are able to read and learning to enjoy books! They also are practicing stamina-to see how long they can stay engaged and involved in books and reading
After they find a good book to read they can get a stuffed animal as their reading buddy.

Every afternoon after our special we have math. Here kids are learning to use the
math materials appropriately, share the materials with others at their table, put them away
before they leave to go to another table and make a choice at a table if there is an empty spot.

In good weather we take both classrooms outside and have snack and let them run around a bit too!

We bring both first grade classes in the modulars together for science each week. Every child has their own science journal and our first few lessons have focused on what a scientist is, what a scientist does and what tools a scientist uses.
Here are a few drawings from kids' journals.

At the end of our day together kids do their classroom jobs or help someone with their job.
